The work was desired by Pope Urban V to better serve the access of the collegiate church he built since 1365 in honor of the Virgin. It could not be started until 1395 and the work lasted 55 years. Six arches give it majestic proportions. Designed to withstand the violent floods of the Tarn, it failed several times to be completely carried away, because when the flood invades the arches, it takes solid foolproof to cope.
