Located at the heart of the Gorges du Tarn, the village of Le Malène has faced difficult times during the Revolution. The rocks still hold marks, witnesses of the fires that devastated the villages.

The main places and monuments of the village are: the Manoir of La Malène that dates back to the 15th century (Louis XII ordered to demolish rebel fortresses but thanks to the services that the Gévaudan lord provided, the castle was spared. It has now been transformed into a hotel-restaurant). There is also the Romanesque church Saint-Jean-Baptiste from the 12th century, registered on the list of Historical Monuments since 1928 and the ruins of the Castel Merlet, oldest known castle of France.

La Malène is mostly famous for its boatmen who offer discovering the beautiful meanders of the Tarn. The village is also the starting and arrival point of canoe-kayak routes. At the bottom of two Grands Causses, the municipality attracts visitors who enjoy the many outdoor activities.
