LA JONTE - MEYRUEIS
Rivers
LA JONTE
48150 MEYRUEIS
The Jonte River rises at an altitude of 1,200 meters on the northern slopes of the Aigoual Massif. Flowing over metamorphic and crystalline terrain, it reaches the village of Meyrueis.
The Jonte then gains in volume, fed by the Brèze and Béthuzon streams, before carving its way into the limestone gorges that it will not leave for 22 kilometers, until its confluence with the Tarn at Le Rozier.
Throughout the gorges, the physico-chemical qualities of the Jonte’s clear, calcium-rich waters are highly favorable to the development of a rich aquatic microfauna. This environment provides ideal conditions for brown trout, which thrive here in exceptionally high densities rarely found elsewhere.
The Jonte River is classified as a first-category river.
