CASTLE OF TOURNEL - MONT LOZÈRE ET GOULET

This imposing fortress stands out at the top of a rocky peak encircled by the Lot. Seat of the powerful Barony du Tournel, Gevaudan in the twelfth century, this site is home to the remains of the castle and the village of Tournel. In the Middle Ages the territory of the barony extends from Goulet to Bougès and the foothills of the Causse de Sauveterre to Villefort and the Cèze Valley. Beyond its historical importance, the Tournel site allows a reading of geological peculiarities, ancient architecture and reveals a vast landscape shaped by the activities of men from yesterday to today.
