CASTANET CASTLE

Its name comes from the word "chestnut tree" in Occitan, the dominant tree in the Cévennes and Mont Lozère sector.

The Castanet manse dates back to the 13th century, but is perhaps older. At that time it was the lord of Hérail, co-lord of the Garde-Guérin and vassal of the bishop of Mende, who owned the manse. Until 1550, the manse was received as an inheritance, in addition to the prestigious right to be part of the Garde-Guérin. It was Robert Brun who owned the manse from 1550. He sold it on December 14, 1571 to Jacques Isarn, from a bourgeois family from Villefort.

Season 2024: This year, the Château de Castanet opens its doors to you and introduces you to the exhibition “Water and Man”: Agricultural use, industrial use, ecological and human issues and the photo exhibitions:
- Agents' favorites: The Cévennes National Park through the eyes of its agents
-The Guardians of the Lake: “Taking the frightening appearance of monsters, they protect the place.
