The small city of Florac, only subprefecture of Lozère and capital of the Cévennes National Park, has 2,000 inhabitants, but its population triples during summer.

The city is located at the crossroads of three remarkable geological sites: schist in the Cévennes, granite on the Mont Lozère and limestone on the Causses. Starting from the municipality, you can roam on trails to contemplate the surrounding landscapes with somptuous views.

Florac was, during the Middle Ages, the centre of a barony that stretched on the Causse Méjean and Cévennes and possessed the two castles of Castelbouc and Montbrun on the Tarn.
During the 14th century, Florac was surrounded by a wall flanked with 12 towers and pierced by 2 gates: Thérond at the north-west, Pêcher at the south-east.
From 1622, new fortifications embrace, in addition to the old town, the faubourg of Le Pêcher, Thérond, Fourniols as well as the castle. The fortifications were demolished following an order of the king in 1629.
