The hamlet of Castelbouc is an unmissable site of the Gorges du Tarn. Very visible from the road coming from Sainte-Enimie, it can be recognised thanks to its castle in ruins perched on an impressive cliff of the Causse Méjean, under which was built a semi-troglodytic village stuck to the cliff's rock.
The charming narrow alleys of the hamlet invite to wander, while you can hear in the distance the sound of a stream whose source gushes not far from there. This source is the origin of a cave which will please caving amateurs, but it is also the cave, near the Tarn, that is worth a glance: it indeed shelters dinosaur traces dating from 168,000 million years ago!
The castle was destroyed by its own lord during the Religion Wars in the 16th century, in order to avoid it being used by protestants who progressed towards Sainte-Enimie.
The trail on the left bank of the Tarn also goes through Castelbouc.
