VILLAGE DE COCURÈS - BEDOUES-COCURES
VILLAGE DE COCURÈS
48400 BEDOUES-COCURES
The old village of Cocurès, which is now a part of the municipality of Bédouès-Cocurès, was set up on a small spur overlooking the Tarn, at the heart of the small valleys that form the Bougès mountain. Its localisation on the heights could explain the origin of its name, the Gaulish word 'kuk-(o)' would mean 'round summit'.
The types of stone of the mountain (the dark schist and light limestone, easier to carve) are the main materials used for construction, which explains this singular combination of dark and light stones for the majority of houses.
Having lived from agriculture and craftmanship for a long time (presence of many weavers and merchants), Cocurès is a calm and relaxing village that offers a nice stroll.
The church, built during the 19th century to replace the former one, too damaged by the torments of time, shelters a large collection of painted decors and is worth going inside.
