At Ispagnac, the Tarn Gorges appear as a broad, cultivated valley, embracing a wooded meander of the Tarn River.
From Montbrun onward, the valley narrows, and a series of cirques follow one another, each sheltering a village nestled in the landscape.
The most picturesque section of the Gorges lies between Montbrun and La Malène, featuring remarkable built heritage and magnificent viewpoints both from the road and from the surrounding heights.
Beyond this stretch rise the most dramatic and rugged cliffs, among them the Cirque des Baumes, the Détroits, the Pas de Souci, the Point Sublime, and the Roc des Hourtous.
The valley then becomes straighter, flanked by the cliffs of Les Vignes, and continues until its confluence with the Jonte River.
