Perched on a spur, the ruins of the Château d'Alta Ripa overlooks the hamlet on the banks of the river. It is mentioned as early as the 11th century, in the 'breve de la patz de Mende' as well as in 'Le Cartulaire' of the big Benedictine Abbey of Aniane. It belonged to the viscount of Arpajon, younger branch of the line of counts from Rodez, related to the main feudal families of the region. This fort controled the passing through the Gorges as well as a trail linking the Causse Méjean to the valley. Moreover, it marked the northern limit of the possessions of the powerful 'Maison d'Anduze' that benefited from seignorial rights on the whole region. During the 18th century, the site was already partly destroyed. (Private property). The two huge wall faces are the remains of a dungeon with an exceptional height. It is still possible to distinguish well-conserved arrow slits. Halfway up the hill between the castle and the hamlet the 'Castelas' is erected, ancient town of the castle.
