The Tarn River rises at an altitude of 1,560 meters, on the southern slope of Mont Lozère, in the northern part of the Pont-de-Montvert commune. Over its 100-kilometer course through Lozère, the river displays a variety of profiles and landscapes.

For most of its journey, the Tarn flows through deep gorges, stretching 53 kilometers between Quézac and Le Rozier. The river experiences distinct seasonal flow variations, with winter and spring floods, while low water levels occur in summer, from July to September.

In Lozère, the Tarn is classified as a first-category river. It is home to a rich variety of fish species, including brown trout, minnows, gudgeon, and bullheads.
